FreedomPop is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that will be launching in the next few months in Spain as originally reported on Venturebeat. FreedomPop has the capability to connect, through free basic mobile service plans, to Facebook’s WhatsApp which means that the service will be free to anyone regardless of how much data you have left.
Though the release is limited to only Spain, it is still a huge step forward for the start-up business founded in Los Angeles, California back in 2011. FreedomPop has tried to make a name for itself by giving away free minutes, text and data to upsell the competition.
FreedomPop does not have a formal partnership with WhatsApp, but is working to organically develop a platform to embrace the model without Facebook having to push WhatsApp. One of the unique sells of FreedomPop is that they also provide you with 200 minutes of talk, 200 text messages, and 200 MB of data trying to obtain as many paying customers as possible.
FreedomPop also allows free roaming in 31 countires and with zero-rated access to popular apps such as WhatsApp it will certainly help increase market share for FreedomPop and disrupt local markets and gain traction with customers in those markets.
The most interesting part of what FreedomPop is trying to accomplish by using WhatsApp is that they are doing this of their own violition, with no partnership with Facebook or WhatsApp.
